Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

As we head towards the inevitable (over) indulgence during Christmas, Tesco are trialing an initiative giving free fruit for children while a would-be good Samaritan tried to return £10 to a woman who didn’t realise she had dropped it, only to be rebuffed with “Sorry, I’m not in to black boys!” so he bought himself some lunch! Here we bring you a round-up of some other news stories, events and tales of the ridiculous from around the world

  1. That bites! A 22 year burglary suspect, on the run from police, was eaten alive by an alligator as he attempted to evade arrest by hiding from sniffer dogs in a pond – presumably unaware the waters were heavily infested with carnivorous crocodiles…
  2. …proving that crime really doesn’t pay, another burglar suspect has died, stuck in the chimney of a house he was attempting to break into! Unaware of his predicament, the homeowner lit a fire and, though he extinguished it as soon as soon as he heard the teen scream for help, emergency services were unable to free 19 year old before he succumbed to smoke inhalation & thermal burns
  3. Meanwhile, in Albuquerque, Jonathan Ray has been arrested after he stole a pot of stew from his own mother after she told him he’d have to wait until Christmas for a portion!
  4. Archaeologists working on Orkney have credited shifting sands with the discovery of 14 houses and stone tools which have been described as “one of the biggest complexes of Bronze Age settlement in the Scottish Isles”
  5. Margarita madness? Pizza Hut is teaming up with Manchester Met to offer 1,500 apprenticeships where students will learn everything from food production to financial analysis along with practical lessons over the next 5 years, effectively meaning that studying for a Degree in Pizza Making is now a credible life-choice
  6. A criminal investigation is underway at a German Zoo after a string of bizarre disappearances and deaths including the suspected theft of 3 Pygmy marmoset monkeys, a penguin found dead in the flamingo cage and the body of a sea lion which had had its skull smashed in and 3 teeth knocked out
  7. NASA has released the striking black & white photos of Saturn captured, unintentionally, by the Cassini probe
  8. Thinking they were listening to a man try to kill a woman, residents in a Sydney apartment block called the police when they heard a male voice shouting ,“I’m going to kill you!” followed by sounds of heavy footsteps, crashing furniture and a woman screaming. When officers arrived, however, it transpired the man had in fact been chasing a spider – albeit a large one – around his apartment with a can of bug-spray and that the “screaming woman” was actually him, as he was highly arachnophobic and genuinely terrified of the 8 legged creature
  9. “What would possess you to do that on the side of the road, with a police officer right behind you?” An officer in Washington was rightly incredulous when a driver attempted to snort cocaine at the wheel after bring pulled over for not having his lights on while driving at night
  10. Cheeky! In Croatia, human rights campaigner Ivan Zvonimir Cicak was left rather red-faced when his trousers fell down during an awards ceremony as he was being handed an accolade by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, before a bank of camera and reporters
