On first impression the statement is shocking, but is it really that surprising?
The research has come from an annual report from Childwise Monitor. They found that those aged five to 16 use the internet for an average of three hours a day and watch TV for 2.1 hours.
With hotels looking to provide services to suit their guests, will we soon see rooms fitted with tablets rather than TVs?
Is it really that shocking?
For many it simply means young people watch less TV on a TV set than they used to and spend more time watching TV online via tablets and smartphones.
Childwise research director Simon Leggett described the shift as a “landmark change in behaviour” brought on by “blurring of television content” between devices.
“TV viewing has been redefined,” he said. “Children are now seeking out the content of their choice. They still find traditional TV programmes engaging but are increasingly watching them online and on-demand or binge watching box sets.”
It is interesting to note the rise of the box set. For those staying in hotels and wanting to relax in their room, will some start providing this option? Or will the opposite happen and will hotels not provide this form of activity so guests can have a digital detox. Time will tell.
